Usage note

In Japan, a person’s family name comes before the given name. Family names are typically passed down patrilineally. Before the 1868 Meiji Restoration, only kuge and samurai who were previously part of a clan used family names, and that tradition only started in the later periods; those who belonged to a clan would use clan names, while those who were clanless simply only had a given name.

Older generations of Japanese women are more likely to use names ending in -ko and -ye than nowadays, while Japanese women born after 1980 tend to have wider range of names with other endings. A notable exception to this trend is the name Michiko, which surged in popularity in 1989 following the ascend of Shouda Michiko as the Empress consort of Japan as the wife of Akihito, the 125th Emperor of Japan reigning from 7 January 1989 to 30 April 2019. Though, before that, she became the Crown Princess of Japan in 1959.

Likewise, older generations of Japanese men are more likely to use names ending in -rou, -ichi, -ichirou, and -hiko than nowadays.

Although there is no legal limit to how many characters a full name may contain, most forms (both paper and digital) in Japan provide empty boxes for only 6–7 characters. The huge majority of Japanese names are 4–5 characters long. Japan as a whole does not recognize the usage of middle names, and there is no spot on legal documents in Japan for middle names, therefore all Japanese nationals’ full names are only 2 words long. However, Japanese diaspora born overseas may take a liking to and have middle names, usually by adding Western names somewhere in the full name.

Another unique difference is that the Japanese have a very different perception of any name’s gender impression, what kanji can go in names, and a very lax grapheme–phoneme system, compared to the rest of the Sinosphere. A good basic example of this is: several names with the same pronunciation and kana but different kanji are completely different names, several names with the same kanji but different pronunciations and kana are slightly different names, which can only be called “the same name” in written-only contexts (still counts as different), while two people whose given names have the same kanji and same pronunciation count as having the same name.
