  • Only 1 out of 1 million people diagnosed with this type of tumor each year
  • About half of lacrimal gland tumors benign, and half malignant
  • Malignant epithelial tumors of the lacrimal gland account for 2% of all orbital (eye socket) tumors
  • Types of Lacrimal Gland Tumor:
    1. Benign mixed epithelial tumor
    2. Malignant mixed epithelial tumor
    3. Lymphoma
    4. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the lacrimal gland
  • Surgery to the eye common in the treatment of a lacrimal gland tumor
  • During surgery, parts of the affected eye removed, or, if necessary, the entire eye (enucleation) will be removed, depending on the size and spread of the tumor
  • Adjuvant external-beam radiotherapy required for close margins, perineural invasion, or adenoid cystic histology (doses of radiotherapy approaching 60 Gy)
