Leon Festinger (1919 - 1989) was a social psychologist who published the book A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance in 1957. This followed his controversial book When Prophecy Fails in 1956. Festinger's Cognitive Dissonance theory continues to be referenced in peer reviewed journals.
