In cold climates, goats require winter fodder such as hay or cut brush, as well as grain mixes with high protein and sugar content to create ample heat in the rumen.

Most saplings and young branches can be provided for the bark, which has a high nutritional value. Be careful not to use branches or poisonous plants.

Roses and some vines (such as honeysuckle) often retail some leaves over winter.
