Today in 1980 the Lisp machine manufacturer Symbolics was founded. It hired off most of the hackers from the artificial intelligence laboratory at MIT and broke with their culture of code sharing. This experience led Richard Stallman to build today’s Free Software community with its explicit philosophy, after a few years of single-handedly competing with software development at Symbolics.
