Tunneling (Networks, Software) – a software process that uses General Routing Encapsulation (GRE) programs to send encrypted or incompatible messages over a network, usually the Internet. The concept refers to the use of the internet by two nodes of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), and their treatment of the internet as a 'tunnel' for their messages.
