The Old Fashioned cocktail is a pre-Prohibition American cocktail.
Ingredients
- 1 shot Rye
- Half-slice of orange
- 1 tsp Sugar (or simple syrup)
- Angostura bitters
Garnishes
- Maraschino Cherry
- Orange
Glass
- Old-Fashioned Glass
Instructions
- Place sugar in glass; add water (~1 tsp) to dissolve
- Muddle in bitters and orange slice
- Fill with ice, add whiskey
- Garnish with cherry
Variations
- The amount of whiskey may be increased
- The Brandy Old Fashioned is popular in some areas, and a rum analogue can be made as well
- This drink is also often served in a highball glass instead of its namesake old-fashioned glass
Recipe for San Diego Old Fashioned
This recipe was contributed by Big V, who was clued in to Old Fashioned cocktails by her grandpa Sid. In Sid's words, "An Old Fashioned is the best drink in the world. It's like an alcoholic lemonade".
- 2 oz bourbon (try to find one with an intense toffee finish)
- 2 maraschino cherries
- The juice of 2 maraschino cherries
- 1/4 lime
- 1/2 lemon
- 1/2 orange
- 2 oz drinking water
- 2 oz Perrier
- 4 ice cubes
- 12 oz Mason jar
- Muddle cherries in cherry juice in the bottom of Mason jar
- Squeeze in the juices of all citrus fruits
- Add drinking water
- Add Perrier
- Add ice cubes
- Add bourbon
- Stir
